Millets and muscle: a protein pairing guide

28 July 2026 · 4 min read · Desi Taakat Journal

Building muscle on an Indian vegetarian diet usually means one of two crutches: soya everything, or imported whey. Millets offer a third path.

Millets are not a complete protein on their own — they are limited in lysine. But pair them with dal, curd or peanuts and the amino profile rounds out beautifully. A bowl of protein millet muesli with milk delivers a complete, slow-digesting protein hit.

On training days, front-load carbs from millets 2–3 hours before your session for steady release, and follow with a protein-dense millet meal within the recovery window.

The rule of thumb: every millet meal gets a partner — a dairy, a legume or a nut. Do that across the week and you can hit 1.6g of protein per kilo without a single scoop of powder.
